Performance of Understanding: Ads of Resistance Project

Point of the Process:  Our culture is full of media—commercials, ads, billboards, film, music, etc.--
and the messages sent by that media affects the way people think and act. In our world, we
also have a lot of media that affects the way we think and act but because media is so normal we often
don’t think critically about its messages. The purpose of this project is to think about the superficial and
subtle messages that ads send to us in order to make us think a certain way and “resist consumption” 
by responding with our own ideas about what is important in life.


DIRECTIONS: Read and follow all 7 steps.


1. Pick an ad from a web-based TV commercial, banner ad, corporate website, or web-based magazine. WHAT IS THIS AD TELLING YOU TO BUY?


2. Figure out  the “subtle” message of the ad.  WHAT IS THIS AD TELLING YOU THAT YOU SHOULD THINK?

     Examples: A REVELON ad may be telling you to buy lipstick but its subtle message might be telling you that “Beauty = What you look like.”

                    A DODGE commercial may be telling you to buy a pick-up truck but its subtle message might be telling you that: 
                    “In order to be a REAL MAN you have to own a TOUGH CAR.”

     Other Subtle Messages:
        YOU HAVE TO BE RICH TO BE HAPPY
        YOU HAVE TO DRINK ALCOHOL TO HAVE FUN
        MAKE-UP MAKES YOU SEXY
        FAST CARS MAKE YOU SEXY
        SKINNY = BEAUTIFUL
        A BUILT BODY = BEAUTIFUL

3. Change your chosen ad into an Ad of Resistance: send a message back to the maker of the ad, that reverses,     contradicts, enlightens, satirizes, resists, and subverts the subtle message of the original ad.
     Example: you may want to respond to an ad that tells you “Beauty = what you look like” by saying instead,  “Beauty=who you are inside”

4. Save your ad as a Microsoft Word Document.
      a. Include a visual component (use pixlr.com or other free photo editing software) that shows your idea.
      b. Include a slogan that lets people know what your poster’s message is.

You do not have to use Pixlr, you may use Paint, Picnic, or just use images with text in Word.

5. Mr. Flamm will circulate during class to offer constructive criticism. He will also conduct a demo on pixlr.com.

6. Email your Word document to icflamm@sof.philasd.org. Respond to any criticism and re-submit if requested.

7. Fill out the form below, based on your Ad of Resistance:

Late Assignments:

Classroom lectures are often presented on EdPuzzle, but all necessary links are posted on Google Classroom.

Assignments are due at 11:59 pm on due date. Unexcused lateness of assignments will be penalized at 10 percent per day late (for example, an assignment that is two days late will have a maximum grade of 80, or B-). After 9 days the assignment is worth zero points. Learners are welcome to submit assignments more than 9 days late as Merit Assignments, but not for class credit.
