Option 1: Show your understanding of the vocabulary terms. What is a hierarchy? What is dominance? Describe two "dominance hierarchies" from the animal world. Describe two "dominance hierarchies" that exists in the human world. How do people use dominance to stay at the top of this particular hierarchy? If you have a job, use it as an example, and describe all of the levels of the hierarchy at work.
Option 2: What is competence? Describe one "competence hierarchy" that exists in the human world. How do people use competence to climb up or stay at the top of this hierarchy? Which one of the two types of hierarchies is more fair, competence hierarchies or dominance hierarchies? Explain why your choice is more fair. Which type of hierarchy would you most like to be at the top of? Why?
Option 3: Why does this pyramidal or triangular structure appear all over the earth, in numerous cultural patterns, and even in the physical architecture of different ancient peoples located on opposite ends of the earth (Mayan, Egyptian)? What is it about the structure of a hierarchy that makes it ubiquitous within the human and animal world? (Ubiquitous means appearing in many places, almost everywhere.)
